What state is Fileporter in?
Prototype. Working, not yet finished. This site describes what exists today rather than what is planned.
Can I use Fileporter today?
Not yet. It is not published, and there is nothing to download or install. The build exists and is described here honestly, but it is not distributed. If you want to be among the first to run it, or you have a use that would shape it, write and say so.
Does anything go through the cloud?
No. There is no relay, no storage service and no coordinator. The two machines open an encrypted connection directly to each other, and the application makes no Internet request for its core operation.
What happens if the transfer is interrupted?
It resumes. Incoming data is staged and checkpointed as it arrives, so a dropped connection, a restart or a sleep picks up where it stopped rather than starting over — as long as the source files are still there and unchanged.
Can someone else on the network send me files?
No. Only devices you have trusted can offer anything, and trust requires both sides to prove possession of their identity over TLS. A device you forget stays revoked; one whose identity no longer matches its advertisement is rejected outright.
It trusts new devices automatically — is that safe?
On your own home or office network, yes: that is authenticated trust on first discovery, and it is what makes setup painless. It does not prove the device belongs to you, so on a shared or hostile network turn on confirmation-required in Settings and compare the six-digit code on both screens.
Will it overwrite a file I already have?
Never. Finalisation refuses to replace existing content; a collision is written as a numbered copy instead.
Does it work on Linux or a phone?
Not today. v1 is Windows and macOS desktop only, and Linux and mobile are explicitly out of scope for this version.
Can I use it between two houses?
No. Fileporter is deliberately local-network only — there is no NAT traversal, no relay and no WAN path. Manual addresses are restricted to private ranges.
